Modbus is a serial communication protocol which enables communication among many devices connected to the same network, for example, a system that measures temperature and humidity and communicates the results to a computer. Modbus is often used to connect a supervisory computer with a remote terminal unit (RTU) in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.
MODBUS can nearly be used overall bus and networks, however, the most common two are Ethernet (TCP/IP) and Serial (RS232, RS485, RS422, etc.). The “Serial” in serial communications refers to the fact that bits are put on the wire one after another. RS-485 is the hardware specification for the physical wiring and connection. MODBUS is the protocol specification that each device uses to communicate over the RS-485 serial line.
