Industrial automation is radically changing the way we work and live. While keeping up with the pace of technological changes, the man-machine interface and the inter-machine communication has also evolved. PROcess FIeld BUS (PROFIBUS) is a standard for Fieldbus communication in automation technology. PROFIBUS is a versatile technology that serves as an ideal solution for manufacturing, process and automation challenges. It can reduce operating cost, improve product quality and increase productivity.
The PROFIBUS family consist of compatible versions like DP (Decentralized Periphery) and PA (Process Automation).
PROFIBUS DP is in the central position and carries communication data between a controller and field devices, preferably in Factory Automation (FA). It is conceived for fast data exchange between sensor-actuator levels. PROFIBUS DP is designed especially for communication between automation control systems and distributed I/O at the device level. It can be used to replace the parallel signal transmission with 24 V or 4 to 20 mA.
PROFIBUS DP is used for interfacing PLC’s, Remote IO Systems, Variable Frequency Drives and HMI’s, Encoders, Sensors, Actuators and other similar devices.
PROFIBUS PA is a communication compatible extension of PROFIBUS DP. It is designed especially for process automation. It permits sensors and actuators to be connected on one common bus line even in intrinsically-safe areas. PROFIBUS PA permits data communication and power over the bus using 2-wire technology. It allows maintenance and connecting/disconnecting equipment even during operation without interfering in other stations in areas potentially explosive.
The PROFIBUS PA attends to the requisites of process automation, where automation systems and process control systems connect with field equipment. It is used for interfacing field measuring devices such as pressure and temperature transmitters, converters, positioners, etc. It may also replace the 4 to 20 mA standard.
PROFIBUS enables consistent data exchange with higher ranking communication systems. Its consistency is enabled by utilizing a single, standardized, application-independent communication protocol, which without any difference, supports Fieldbus solutions both in factory and process automation as well as in motion control and safety-related tasks.
