While technology is advancing and we are finding ways of transferring energy without the use of wires, cables are still the main vectors of electricity. Due to their wide spread requirement, cables have undergone many modifications and variations to suit specific functions. However, bifurcating cables on the basis of use does not mean they are bound to that specific purpose. Similar cables can be used varyingly for a range of uses.
Cables used in vehicles and other automotive appliances are different than the cables used at home. They must be able to withstand a great deal of abrasions and constant pressure as well as high temperatures. Auto cables must be durable enough to withstand long periods of stress so that the vehicle may function properly. Automotive cables are also used in industrial machinery as they are able to function under pressure better than regular cables. As they are designed for intense use, the need to replace and repair them would be significantly lesser.
Submersible cables are used either in very wet or completely submerged environments. Off shore oil rigs, submarines and ships make use of these cables in their equipment. They are also able to handle higher levels of pressure than normal cables. While these cables may not be viable for home use, their properties can be useful for places which receive a lot of rainfall or are in danger of flooding.
Switchboard cables are useful for telephonic purposes as well as when being used for local intercom and modem services for internet connections.
PVC flexible cables are useful for small, medium and large scale industries due to their flexibility and ease of installation. They are especially useful in tight spaces where the bending radius is less and are used in wiring control panels and various machines.
The need of power cables is still very prominent regardless of the technological advancements we achieve. Knowing the properties of different cables would mean that we would be able to adapt the appropriate ones to our needs.
